How to Remove Example Widget?

If the sidebars on your site do not have any widgets or if you delete all the widgets from any of the sidebars, you will notice an “Example Widget” will appear automatically on that particular sidebar. Because of this, the sidebars will not remain empty even if there are no widgets, as shown in the screenshot below:

In order to remove the “Example Widget”, you can do any one of the following things:

  • Change the Sidebar Area to Remove the Widget
  • Replace Example Widget With Other Widgets

Change the Sidebar Area to Remove the Widget #

If you navigate to Appearance > Customize > Global > Layout > Sidebar Layout, you will get the following options:

  • Default layout
  • Default layout for page posts only
  • Default layout for single posts only

For each of the options above, we have 5 different layouts:

  • Left Sidebar
  • Right Sidebar
  • No Sidebar
  • No Sidebar Full Width
  • Double Sidebar

From the layouts mentioned above, if you choose No Sidebar or No Sidebar Full Width layout for your desired page, the Example Widget will be removed along with the sidebar.

Another way to remove the Example Widget is to replace it with other widgets. As the Example Widget only appears if the sidebar is empty, adding some other widgets to the sidebar will help you replace the Example Widget.

You can add the widgets to the sidebar in two ways:

  • Via customizer
  • Via widgets page

Via Customizer #

Go to Appearance > Customize > Widgets > Right Sidebar, click on Add Block and add the widget that you want. You can check the video below for reference:

Via Widget’s Page #

Go to Appearance > Widgets and click on the Right Sidebar widget’s location. You can then click on the Add Block button and select your desired widget. You can check the video below for reference:
